QR Code Won't Scan
Step-by-step checks when a QR code fails to scan on mobile devices.
A QR code that won't scan is usually caused by one of a small number of issues. Work through this checklist in order.
1. Check contrast
The dark modules must have strong contrast against the light background. Regenerate the QR code with a pure black (#000000) fill on white (#FFFFFF) background to test if contrast is the issue.
2. Check the quiet zone
A QR code needs at least 4 modules of blank margin on all four sides. If your design or print crops into this margin, scanners will fail. Re-export with the 'Border width' set to at least 4.
3. Check the minimum size
Printed QR codes need a minimum size to be scannable. For handheld materials, use at least 2 cm × 2 cm. Anything smaller risks scan failure on older devices.
4. Check the logo size
If you embedded a logo, it must not cover more than 25–30% of the QR code area. Use 'error correction: High (30%)' when using logos.
5. Test with multiple devices
- Test on both iOS (Camera app) and Android (Camera app or Google Lens).
- Try scanning at different distances — 15 cm to 30 cm is the sweet spot for most phones.
- Test under different lighting conditions.
6. Re-download and reprint
If the issue started after printing, download a fresh copy in SVG format (recommended for print) and reprint. JPG compression artifacts can degrade scannability.
