5 Common QR Code Mistakes That Kill Your Scan Rates
Most QR code failures come down to the same five mistakes. Avoid these and your codes will perform significantly better.
QR codes are simple in concept but easy to get wrong in practice. These five mistakes account for the majority of QR code "failures" — codes that technically work, but that almost nobody scans.
Mistake 1: Printing Too Small
The most common mistake. A QR code that looks fine on screen can become unscannable when printed at business card size without proper scaling.
Fix: Minimum 2.5 × 2.5 cm for handheld materials, 4 × 4 cm for table displays. When in doubt, go bigger.
Mistake 2: No Call to Action
A QR code without context is just a decorative graphic. People don't scan codes out of curiosity — they scan when there's a clear, compelling reason to.
Fix: Always include a CTA: "Scan for menu," "Scan to enter," "Scan to save 20%." Place it directly above or below the code in readable font size.
Mistake 3: Linking to a Desktop-Optimized Page
QR codes are scanned on phones. If the destination page requires pinching and zooming, loads slowly, or requires Flash, you've lost your visitor in the first 3 seconds.
Fix: Always test your destination URL on mobile before printing. Ensure the page loads in under 3 seconds on a cellular connection.
Mistake 4: Using a Static Code for Things That Change
Using a static QR code for a seasonal promotion, a menu, or an event means your code becomes broken or misleading the moment the campaign ends.
Fix: Use dynamic QR codes for anything that might change. Update the destination URL from your dashboard when you need to — the physical code never needs to change.
Mistake 5: Putting QR Codes Where They Can't Be Scanned
Common bad placements include:
- On a moving vehicle (buses, delivery trucks) — not scannable in motion
- On websites or digital screens — users are already on a device, a clickable link is better
- High on a wall where people need to crane their necks
- In environments with poor lighting
- Behind glass or plexiglass that causes glare
Fix: Place QR codes where someone with a phone can comfortably point their camera for 1–2 seconds: eye level, good light, stable positioning, clear sightline.
Bonus Mistake: Not Tracking Performance
Static codes give you no data. Dynamic codes give you scan counts, device types, locations, and time-of-day data. If you're not using analytics, you're flying blind on what's working.
